Part 2
The Disney Men, on:
Fantasia – pretentious or brilliant?
Jo: So, apparently there were quite a few critics that
suggested Walt Disney’s Fantasia was quite pretentious. Walt always swore that
he would never make a movie like that and was devastated. What did you think of
it?
Nathan: I'll let Alex go first.
Alex: I mean, those critics can go f**k themselves. In my
personal opinion.
Jo: You liked Fantasia then?
Alex: You put classical music score to an animated movie and
suddenly you're pretentious. I'm sorry, let's throw in some cheesy pop music so
we're down with the average Joe. Tossers. I love fantasia. One of my favourite
Disney movies.
Jo: According to a documentary I saw, Fantasia was the first
project he got excited about since Snow White. Cinderella was being made around
about the same time but he wasn’t interested.
Nathan: Cinderella is amazing. I don't understand his
feelings on his own films. Fantasia is probably my least favourite Disney
movie. And I saw cars 2.
Alex: Least? How could fantasia be your least favourite?
With all the crap coming out recently?! Okay, now we have something. Let's do
this.
Jo: It was super arty .... can’t imagine many kids liked it.
Alex: Who gives a flying f**k about the kids? It's like Star
Wars ep 1, 2, and 3. They made them kid friendly to the detriment of the saga.
Nathan: What crap are you talking about? We are talking
about wizard Mickey - basically, conducting a show, dancing broomsticks?
Pretentious. As. F**k. I feel like fantasia is the yellow submarine of Disney.
Alex: As opposed to Mickey's more accurate characterization
as a f**king chartered accountant? He's a talking mouse! Who previously was
seen operating a boat.
Jo: It doesn’t really have a story though, that’s why I'm a
bit confused by the movie.
Nathan: It basically is meant for you to take drugs with.
Alex: It's got lots of little stories. He took modern cinema
and movie production and brought some of the most classic masterpieces to the
modern screen.
Nathan: So does ‘Love Actually’, but 3/4 of that film sucks
too.
Alex: He couldn’t make a whole movie based on Debussy' Clair
de lune. Hence the short stories.
Nathan: ...or you could just not make it.
Alex: Definitely agree that it's good to watch on drugs though!
The mouse was what started his career progression so he must have been excited
about making a feature length with him. But... Debussy.
Nathan: I've never seen it on drugs.
Alex: I watched it stoned once. I don’t think you need drugs,
it’s a bit of a mind f**k that could tip you over the edge.
Nathan: That's why you need drugs. To make sense of random
shit.
Alex: ^ word. Disney also relied largely on remaking classic
stories into movies. He had something to work with. The mouse didn't have a
story.
Nathan: I'm sorry but avant garde cartoons are not my idea
of a good time.
Alex: For a great time try watching apocalypse now on mute
while playing dark side of the moon. While high obviously. I think making Fantasia
was courageous.
Nathan: Fantasia could have basically been directed by Lars
von trier and I'm not sure it would have been that different.
RIGHT THEN ... SEEMS AS THOUGH I HIT A NERVE.
